Inside 18 Wintery Homes From the AD Archive—From Snowy Cabins to Chic Chalets
A seductive winter backdrop isn’t always defined by snow-capped mountains, powder-covered fir trees, or rustic and crackling fires. A dip through the Architectural Digest archive illuminates a number of inviting archetypal cabins, but there are also plenty of understated urban setups that entice with cool, ethereal colorways befitting a frosty landscape. However, we at AD love a good romp through the classics, like Colorado ranches and log cabins. City or country, new or old, here are 18 wintry homes from the archives that are helping us slog through the end of the colder months.
Camping out in Wisconsin
Boy Scouts once frequented Camp Delavan—located on a lake in Wisconsin—but after it shuttered in the 1980s, it languished. That is until Jennifer and Alec Litowitz scooped it up and turned it into a convivial compound for friends and family. “Jennifer’s directive was, ‘I want it to feel like Wisconsin in the 1940s,’” said designer Bruce Fox, who worked alongside architect R. Michael Graham on the project. This retro spirit is reflected throughout, from the dining hall—which was converted into a commodious living area adorned with hearthstones, wall beams, boards, and trusses salvaged from the old structure—to the antique bed frames and custom ikat benches in a bedroom.
